Why Won’t She Talk to Me?

Maybe she is just punishing me for being away, but my daughter does not want to talk to me on the phone. Before I leave on a trip I tell her that I will miss her and that I will call her every day. She tells me she will miss me too and does not want me to leave. She doesn’t really mention the phone, so maybe she is planning in advance not to speak with me, I’m not sure.

Either way, whenever I call, she does not want to talk to me. The only way I usually get to hear her voice is the loud “No!” I can hear on my end when she is asked if she wants to talk to Daddy. Sometimes we do trick Ruby by putting her on speakerphone and having me talk to her until she answers, but that doesn’t always work either.

There is only one sure fire way to get Ruby on the phone with me, and that is to tell her I got her a present. Suddenly she is very interested in what Daddy has to say. I finally got her talking last night by bringing up the prospect of Disney World.

We had a nice talk, as much as one can with a three year old that only wants to talk about when she is getting to Florida. But after a few minutes it was time to say goodbye. When Ruby says goodbye to me on the phone, for some reason she likes to make up a weird nickname for me every time. Something like, goodbye Daddy Yo-Yo Squiggle Bottoms. So then I have to say Goodbye Ruby Goober Bungee Yo-Yo. And this is the best part of my day.
