Ah, summer! The time of year when there is nothing better than a cold, refreshing beverage. Unless you are Ruby. She has always hated cold drinks, which can sometimes make life difficult.
Now, I know that it is not officially summer yet, but when it is in the 90’s, I think that counts. Especially in a house with no A.C. After the delightful events of yesterday morning, I decided we were going to hang out at the mall for the afternoon, where it is nice and cool, and we would even get some nice cold summery drinks while we were there.
When we arrived at the food court I asked Ruby what she wanted to drink, and she said “sink water.” Now, I should explain that Ruby really hates cold drinks. I can’t tell you the number of times I have had to return drinks at restaurants because I forgot to tell them “no ice.” Ruby will have a fit if there is any ice in her drink. And at home, we have a Brita in the fridge which she will also not drink out of, because “fridge water” is too cold. She only likes luke-warm sink water.
So here we are at the mall, and I am offering milkshakes, strawberry lemonade, and any variety of sodas and flavored milks, and the girl is crying at the top of her lungs because I won’t give her sink water. I even took her to the drinking fountains by the restrooms, but no, that water was too cold she said. But it is summer! No one is selling hot drinks, except coffee, and I’m not giving her coffee! I finally managed to get her to drink chocolate milk, but very reluctantly, and as soon as we were home, she had herself a nice tall glass of warm sink water. It’s all about the simple pleasures in life, isn’t it? Yum.
