Yesterday I was attempting to do laundry at Nini’s again. When we arrived I took the children upstairs and dropped them off so that I could go back downstairs for the laundry. I’m trying to do it every week now, so that it’s not as overwhelming when laundry day arrives, and as such I had only two baskets of laundry instead of the usual four. This seemed like a one-trip kind of a job, so I stacked one basket on top of the other and headed for the front door of the apartment building.
As I crossed the parking lot and neared the door, I saw some guy also heading for the door, but about 10 seconds in front of me. As he reached the door, he turned back and saw me coming, made eye contact, and then slipped inside the building, disappearing from sight as the door closed and locked behind him. I trudged as fast I could over to the door, wondering if I could get the keys out of my pocket while still holding the giant bins of dirty clothes, detergent, and the diaper bag. No, I could not. I silently cursed the guy a little for not holding the door. He had obviously seen me, but I guess it was not his job to help me out.
As I started to put the clothes down, the door suddenly swung open, and the guy reappeared. “Oh man,” he said guiltily, “I was just thinking, that guy is carrying two huge things, and I’m not gonna hold the door for him? Sorry about that.” He held the door for me, as well as the next door, and then got the elevator for me. He also complimented the Spider-Man shirt that I was wearing, which shows his good fashion sense. Then he got off on a different floor, and I took the laundry into the apartment for a day of washing, drying and folding.
And that’s it. Not much of a story, I know, but it totally made my day.
