Until recently, I had heard only rumors and legends concerning Saturday Night Steak Night. Words whispered on the winds, disappearing as fast as they had come and fading from memory almost as quickly. I knew that it involved steak of course, and that it took place on Saturdays, but the only other clue I had was that it definitely occurred at night, as evidenced by the double use of the word.
My friend P.J. Tetersen, whom you may recall from previous blogs as a friend with whom I am always arguing with online, told me of Saturday Night Steak Night in confidence, but I will now reveal to you for the first time the mysteries of this elusive feast. I know all, because I was there. This past Saturday, was my Saturday Night Steak Night Night!
To begin with, the event is hosted by P.J.’s parents, the Tetersens. The dinner always includes the two of them, P.J., and his sister Pannah. But their table seats 6-8 people, so there is always room for a few extras at the feast. Apparently, this most sacred of all local tables is host to a revolving doors of guests, all of whom together comprise a who’s-who of people in the area who are friends with one of the Tetersens. I can’t say for sure how many people get a second invitation, but it can’t be that many, so when you do get the call, savor and appreciate it.
The dinner started, as all good dinners do, with a walk along the water as we laughed at various people that we had gone to high school with. I do not know if all of their dinners start with mocking former friends, but they sure ought to. When the walk was finished we headed back to the main event, which was the steak obviously, but it was so much more than steak. It was steak, plus other foods that are a secret, so I cannot tell you about them. If they wanted you to know about the salad, it would be called Saturday Night Steak and Salad Night. Oh, wait. Shoot. I mentioned the salad. Well, okay, but you don’t know what kind of salad. I think I’m still safe.
I’m also not sure if I should mention the art gallery tour, or if that is a secret too. I can probably talk about the shrimp, because they were really more of an appetizer, oh, except, I put some on my steak, so, well, okay forget I said anything about shrimp. I also should not discuss how we all tried to make the elder Tetersens laugh by saying shocking and inappropriate things. And they probably don’t want me to call them elder either. I mean, they are not super old or anything, just, oh, never mind. Forget it.
I’m not getting invited back, am I?
