Mick(y) or Treat

As they closed the doors of my plane on the tarmac at JFK, the pilot announced to all of us that it was currently snowing in Burlington.  A collective groan arose from the passengers and I instantly knew what kind of Halloween I was in for: a cold one.  I cannot describe in words the joy that was felt as I reunited with my children after an almost six week absence, so I won’t even try, but man, it was joyous.

We grabbed lunch at Zachary’s Pizza (one of the great joys of being home) and then headed north so we could pick my Mom up from the ferry.  Remember when I told you my mother was making Ruby’s costume?  Well, my mother ended up having a hand in all of our costumes.  Ruby made a spectacular Mickey Mouse, and I must say, my mother really outdid herself this year.

Baby Edward looked great too.  I had found the giant hat in New York and my Mom made the rest.  Sure, most of the time the hat was covering his entire face, but that’s ok, it was cold out!  In fact, when we left for trick of treating, it was hailing.  I think Edward was the warmest one out of all of us!

Simone’s Minnie Mouse costume was ordered online, but when it arrived on Saturday (note on your calendars that this was the day before Halloween) it did not include any ears.  Who sells a Minnie Mouse costume without Minnie Mouse ears?  That’s just insanity.  And of course I don’t even need to tell you that on the day before Halloween, all the mouse ears were sold out everywhere.  So we called my mother.  She used some bunny ears, folded them down, sewed black over them and made the bow herself.  She also added a tail to the dress, as that was not included either.  It was more like a Minnie Human costume when we got it, but my mother made it all mouse.

And finally, I went as Goofy.  Other than the fact that my hat weighed four thousand pounds and I could not move my head all night, I think it was a very successful costume.  She made the vest out of a t-shirt, and the pants are actually scrubs!

So with costumes on, and buckets empty, we set out of our doorway ready for trick-or-treating!  And Ruby immediately face plants on the concrete.  There was blood and screaming and running, panicked people.  Actually, it was very Halloweeny.  Poor Ruby.  Her lips are all swollen now and she has a sizable cut next to her eye, plus some road rash down the side of her face.  But we had fun anyway!  Thank goodness this happened after we took the pictures!

We drove down to South Burlington to trick-or-treat in Simone’s old neighborhood.  Ruby got sixty-four pieces of candy.  We counted them together at Nini’s house after we got too cold and snowy to stay out any longer.  Ruby’s a pretty good counter.  And luckily we had the foresight to bring a bag around for Edward as well, so Mommy and Daddy got sixty-four pieces of candy too!  Yum!  I’m going to go start my sugar rush now.  Happy Halloween everyone!

  1. I hope Ruby feels better!

Your Mom did an amazing job. Why didn’t she have a costume for herself? Daisy Duck maybe!

All the colors remind me of our production of GODSPELL in high school.
