Emergency Rooms, Bacon, and Chocolate Pudding

This is not what I wanted to write about today.  I wanted to tell you about my trip to New York for auditions, the Halloween party that I went to, impending storm stuff, or pretty much anything else but my daughter’s health issues.  Sadly, that is all I have been dealing with for the past few days.  On my way home from New York yesterday I got a call that Ruby had another extended seizure, this one lasting for almost 90 minutes, and that she was in the emergency room for the second time in four days.

We got not much help from the ER in terms of answers.  Once again Ruby didn’t remember much about what had happened, and when the episode was over she was back to normal.  They gave her not one, but two chocolate puddings, and when we got home we asked her what she wanted to eat.  She wisely picked bacon and eggs, but only ate the bacon, and the went to bed relaxed and exhausted.

Then, this morning, as we were getting ready for the day, it happened again.  She just went away and was mostly non-responsive, so we scooped her up and drove back to the ER.  Finally her actual neurologist was back in town, and he came down to meet with us, we hoped bringing all of the answers with him.  He told us that in his opinion this is still a manifestation of Ruby’s original epilepsy, and he just upped the medication again and we are going to watch her very closely this week.

Of course what I wanted him to say was, “Oh, yeah this happens all the time.  Just push this button and everything will go back to normal.”  I’m still hopeful that the higher levels of medication are that button, but if not, we will try other medications, other tests, and whatever else we need to try.  All of this is just to say, I am exhausted, my wife is exhausted, and we thank everyone for the kind words, prayers, hugs, and support.  Hopefully tomorrow we can get back to amusing posts about music and things Edward steals/breaks.  And Ruby is back to normal for now, actually better than ever, since she gets to eat chocolate pudding and bacon for dinner.
