Musical Instruments Ranked in Order of How Cool They Make You

Kids, you may be thinking about learning a musical instrument.  This is a good idea for many reasons.  It will give you an enjoyable life-long hobby.  It will improve your brain and motor functions, causing you to do better in school.  And it will also affect your social standing.  The hard fact of the matter is that, while all musical instruments are beneficial to your mind and body, all are not equal in the biased minds of society.  So, in order to prevent unfortunate disillusionment somewhere down the line, here is a list of musical instruments ranked in order of how cool they will make you seem when you tell people that you play them.

SUPER COOL
Drums
Guitar
Saxophone
Piano/Keyboards
Trumpet
Violin
Trombone
Didgeridoo
Harmonica
Harp
Cello
Ocarina
Flute
Hurdy Gurdy
Double Bass
Theremin
French Horn
Banjo
Clarinet
Harpsichord
Viola
Ukulele
Oboe
Tuba
Keytar
Bassoon
Recorder
Bagpipes
Jug
Slide Whistle
Accordion
Kazoo
Triangle
NOT COOL

Hopefully this list will be useful in choosing your musical instrument of choice.  It should be helpful for you to know, for instance, that the Theremin is two notches higher than the Banjo, or that no matter how cool the guitar player is, the drummer is always slightly cooler.  Choose wisely my friends, and always remember that if someone says they play the triangle, it means that they don’t play anything.

  1. Lmao this is a very handy list. We might need to use this in music major recruiting fairs. However, I know SEVERAL brass players who would have to rank horn above trombone. I have heard it does something to the brain, whereas horn players bridge the gap between orchestra and band, so they are immediately more popular and like able. Food for thought… 😉

    • But trombone players bridge the gap between nerd band and jazz band! I guess when I was thinking of it, I was imagining someone telling a stranger at the grocery store that they played either a Horn or a Trombone, and trying to gauge the assumed coolness. Whether or not they are in fact cooler, trombones are perceived as cooler, no?

  2. 1. This can not be self-referential within brass players; that would be like asking outfielders on a baseball team which of their three positions was cooler.
    2. There is no horn part in jazz. Ever. QED, horn can never be as cool as trombone, even if horn players are almost as odd as trombone players (god bless ’em).
