It was just leaked/announced that Marvel is developing a spin-off show from its popular hit “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” This is exciting news for me, because I love that show and all things Marvel. It is also exciting because the last spin-off they did, “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” was so ridiculously awesome. Seriously. If you did not watch that show, find it somewhere. It is well worth your time. And Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is great too! Yes, I know, you watched the first few episodes and were not impressed. Well, that’s how great TV works. The first few episodes are never good! With a few exceptions (Lost, The Last Man on Earth), you really need to get past the stumbling around phase that most shows begin with. I hated ALL of my favorite shows at the beginning (The Office, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, Fringe). But trust me. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is one of the best shows out there right now, and it just keeps getting better.
So what are the pros of a new spin-off? Well, obviously we would get more of the Marvel brand of awesomesauce. Have you seen the new Daredevil on Netflix yet? No? Then WHY ARE YOU READING THIS?! Go watch it! Marvel makes good stuff. They have yet to make a huge mistake. Sure, a few things are only good and not great, but nothing has been bad yet. I would absolutely watch pretty much anything they put out at this point, and then beg for more. In fact, I may have accidentally begged for more. Could that be why they are creating this spin-off?
Of course there are cons to making a spin-off show. If they renew Agent Carter, plus keep Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. going, and then we get another successful show, how long would it be until every single show on every channel is a Marvel show? And yes, I know it’s hard for you to see a downside to that, but the simple fact of the matter is that I would not get anything done if that were to happen. And what if I fell asleep?! I might miss something! So having hundreds of Marvel shows could get to be a problem. I simply don’t have time to watch television all day. They are going to need to cap it off at some point.
There is also this to consider: we have no idea what this new show might be about. Nothing has been leaked/announced in that department so far. They say it will come out of the end of this season organically and, while we still have several episodes to go, I do have a few guesses. Caution: SPOILERS ahead (as well as a bunch of made up stuff that can’t all be true).
SPOILER GUESS #1: The spin-off from Marvel’s Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! Pretty good guess, eh? I mean, they might have to call it Marvel’s Agents of the REAL S.H.I.E.L.D., or Marvel’s Agents of the OTHER S.H.I.E.L.D., but at this point we have two agencies fighting over which one of them is the true version of what the world needs. With characters switching sides and revealing allegiances, it wouldn’t be too far of a stretch to imagine that we could end up with one show featuring Coulson’s original team, and another show featuring Bobbi, Mack, Gonzalez, and that whole crew. On the “maybe not” side, do we really need multiple shows that are basically exactly the same, just with different actors and locations? On the “on the other hand” side, it seems to work for CBS.
SPOILER GUESS #2: The spin-off from Marvel’s Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be: Marvel’s Inhumans! This seems very possible as well. With Skye off in Afterlife we have a whole new setting and cast of characters to explore. How much can we really explore such things in a show titled Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? If they want to flesh these guys out more, a spin-off might be the way to go. On the “maybe not” side, they do have an Inhumans movie coming out a few years down the road. Do they really want to spoil the build-up and anticipation of that movie with a show that may or may not succeed? On the “on the other hand” side, Inhumans is even less well known than Guardians of the Galaxy. Wouldn’t it be nice (and somewhat ingenious) to have a built-in audience and fan-base for that film when it arrives?
SPOILER GUESS #3: The spin-off from Marvel’s Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be: Marvel’s Deathlok & Friends! Now wouldn’t that be cool? A full on Deathlok show on network television? He could gather other heroes, like Mockingbird or even Sif, and have a superteam wander the country doing things that the humans can’t. Maybe Skye could join this team with her Quake powers and be the anchor to the other show, for future crossovers. Because whatever this show is, you know there are going to be crossovers. On the “maybe not” side, I don’t know how much audiences are clamoring for a Deathlok & Friends show. On the “on the other hand” side, it could be a great launching pad or testing ground for characters Marvel is thinking of playing with.
SPOILER GUESS #4: The spin-off from Marvel’s Agent’s of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be: Marvel’s Agents of Hydra! What is Grant Ward doing these days? We may find out next week, and it may be Hydra related. We also know that Hydra plays a big role in the upcoming Avengers sequel. The current S.H.I.E.L.D. show spun out of the last Avengers movie. Would it be that much of a long shot to think that they might try it again with the second one? Marvel is brilliant at the long set-up, and if they were able to take elements from Age of Ultron as well as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., they might be able to craft a compelling show about the bad guys, or at least maybe the good guys who are working from within to take it down. Simmons and Ward have both been on the inside before, and so has Bobbi. It’s not much of a stretch to imagine that there are other agents involved. On the “maybe not” side, is Marvel really ready to go full villain? Sony was ready to do Sinister Six, and Fox is ready to do Deadpool, but the Marvel brand itself trends a little lighter. On the “on the other hand” side, Age of Ultron does look pretty dark. Could Marvel be ready to take a step deeper into the darkness and develop a show primarily about the villains?
Really, I have no idea. I am just excited about the news and I am excited for pretty much anything with a superhero in it, which you know if you ever visited my Spider-Man bathroom. So have a happy Friday, have fun guessing yourself, and if you are not watching all my favorite shows, then all I have to say to you is that apparently we have different tastes.
